It’s a fish-out-of-water crime-comedy with a surprisingly openhearted pulse: Eugene Levy’s anxious, put-upon banker makes a perfect foil for Madea’s blunt wisdom, and the culture shock becomes a vehicle for family reckonings that feel warmer than you might expect. The jokes can be broad and the tone is unapologetically Perry—part sitcom, part sermon, part Southern ruckus—so if you don’t like Madea’s style, you won’t be converted here.
