Muck (2015)

Muck has the kind of grimy, midnight-movie energy that horror fans chase: it drops you into chaos already in motion and never pretends you’re here for comfort. The filmmaking leans hard into slick, moody cinematography and a swamp-soaked aesthetic, then punctuates it with crunchy practical-style gore that’s eager to test your stomach. There’s also a welcome jolt of genre pedigree in Kane Hodder’s presence, lending the carnage a knowing wink without turning it into parody. It’s not for viewers who need airtight plotting or subtle scares, but if you’re on the fence and want a lean, nasty, effects-forward thrill ride with a sense of untapped potential, this one scratches that itch.

Muck is clearly aiming for a grimy, backwoods survival slasher where a group of friends staggers out of a nightmare only to find the night isn’t done with them yet. The problem is it plays like a rough first draft: the storytelling is messy, the script feels incoherent, and the acting rarely sells the panic, so the tension keeps leaking out. Add in a heavy dose of gratuitous nudity and abrupt tonal lurches that undercut whatever dread it’s trying to build, and you’re left with a movie that’s more exhausting than scary. If you’re the kind of horror fan who can enjoy cheap, sleazy B-movie chaos for its own sake, you might find a few bloody moments to latch onto, but if you want coherent suspense or genuine scares, this probably isn’t worth your time.
