Coldwater (2013)
A teenage boy is sent to a juvenile reform facility in the wilderness. As we learn about the tragic events that sent him there, his struggle becomes one for survival with the inmates, counselors, and the retired war colonel in charge.
What people think about Coldwater
Coldwater grabs you by the collar with a premise that feels uncomfortably plausible, then tightens the grip with taut direction and performances that make every glance and silence count. It’s a wilderness-set thriller-drama that trades cheap shocks for a steady, realistic sense of dread, letting the truth of what happened—and what’s happening now—surface with a riveting inevitability. The first hour, in particular, is the kind of controlled, confident filmmaking critics love: lean, propulsive, and quietly revelatory as it turns a “reform school” story into something far more harrowing. It’s not an easy watch, and those looking for catharsis or conventional thrills may find it grim, but if you want an acclaimed, hard-edged film that transcends its genre and lingers after the credits, Coldwater is worth the plunge.
Coldwater is clearly aiming for a tense, grounded look at the brutality of a wilderness reform camp, and for a while it gets there with strong atmosphere and committed performances. The problem is it starts to reach for bigger, darker twists than it’s earned, and the story slides into melodrama instead of tightening the screws. By the final stretch, the plotting can feel convoluted and emotionally pushy, like it’s trying to force shock and catharsis rather than letting them land naturally. If you like slow-burn survival dramas and can tolerate a messy, overcooked ending, you may still find it gripping; if you need a clean, satisfying payoff, this one may leave you annoyed.
