What people think about The Lady Vanishes
The Lady Vanishes (2013) takes one of the great “am I losing my mind?” premises and plays it with a cool, old-world confidence: a glamorous train journey turns claustrophobic when a kindly stranger disappears and every polite face insists she never existed. Diarmuid Lawrence leans into a suspense that’s more melancholy than flashy, letting doubt seep into every corridor and compartment while the period atmosphere—cigarette smoke, social niceties, and unspoken motives—tightens like a noose. Tuppence Middleton is terrific as Iris, giving the mystery emotional bite, and Keeley Hawes adds a deliciously watchable edge to the ensemble of passengers who may be allies, obstacles, or something worse. If you’re expecting Hitchcock’s exact rhythm, this closer-to-the-novel interpretation may feel quieter and different, but if you want a pleasurable, steadily gripping whodunit with a slightly eerie chill, it’s an easy ticket to punch.
The Lady Vanishes (2013) is clearly aiming for a moodier, more novel-faithful twist on the classic “was she ever there?” train mystery, leaning into melancholy and unease over sparkling banter. The problem is the pacing: it often feels slow and heavy, so the central hook can start to drag instead of tightening the screws. If you’re coming for Hitchcock-style lightness, wit, and that crackling sense of fun, this version may feel flat and a bit too sentimental for its own good. Still, the period atmosphere is solid and the cast is capable, so if you prefer subdued, ominous mysteries with mild intensity rather than a brisk thriller, it may land better for you.
