What’s in a Name is a deceptively simple dinner-party comedy that turns one ill-advised joke into a fireworks display of wit, ego, and affection, all contained in a single Paris apartment like a pressure cooker with perfect acoustics. The pleasure is in the precision: razor-clean dialogue, impeccable comic timing, and an ensemble that knows exactly when to pounce and when to let a silence do the damage. It’s lively and frequently hilarious without feeling weightless, because beneath the banter you can sense the old histories and tender nerves that make family and friends so easy to love and so easy to wound. If you prefer broad gags or a plot that leaves the room, this may feel talky—but if you enjoy smart, character-driven comedy where words are the action, it’s an enormously satisfying watch.

What’s in a Name wants to be a sharp, civilized French comedy where one tasteless provocation at a dinner party peels back everyone’s politeness and exposes the rot underneath. When it works, the cast has great timing and the escalating social discomfort can be genuinely funny in that wince-inducing way. But it’s extremely talky and intentionally stagey, with most of the “action” being people arguing in a room, so if you need visual flair, variety of locations, or characters you actually like spending time with, this may feel like a long, bitter squabble.
