Jordan Vogt-Roberts directs with a confident, sun-dappled style that makes the woods feel like both a playground and a proving ground, while Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso, and the scene-stealing Moisés Arias give the friendship a lived-in sweetness beneath the jokes. The vibe is breezy and offbeat, but it’s not empty: it quietly understands how pride, crushes, and loyalty can turn a perfect summer into something more complicated. If you’re allergic to quirky coming-of-age comedies or prefer your teen stories grittier, it may feel a little heightened—but if you want something funny, heartfelt, and surprisingly tender, this is a small gem worth finding.

The Kings of Summer is aiming for a coming-of-age escape fantasy with real emotion underneath the jokes, and when it clicks, it captures that intoxicating, stupid confidence of being 16 and convinced you can reinvent life in the woods. The problem is the script can feel scattered and a bit too eager to spell out what you’re supposed to feel, so moments that should land naturally sometimes play like sitcom beats with a “lesson” attached. It also coasts into a more conventional final stretch, which can make the whole adventure feel smaller than the premise promises. Still, the three leads have charm (especially the oddball energy of Biaggio), so if you enjoy quirky teen hangout movies more than tight plotting, you’ll probably have a better time than someone looking for a sharp, emotionally subtle indie.
