Bad Words (2013)

Bad Words is the kind of comedy that dares you to laugh and then surprises you by earning it, anchored by Jason Bateman’s deliciously sour performance and a directorial debut that’s sharper than its premise has any right to be. The movie runs on wicked, well-timed writing—insults that land, awkward silences that sting, and a steady escalation of chaos as a grown man bullies his way through a very polite children’s competition. What really sells it, though, is the uneasy chemistry between Bateman and Rohan Chand: beneath the bite, there’s a surprisingly human push-and-pull that gives the film a pulse, with Kathryn Hahn adding bright, knowing energy around the edges. It’s definitely not for everyone—this is R-rated, mean-spirited humor with real edge—but if you like your laughs a little nasty and your comedies smart enough to know what they’re doing, it’s a bracingly funny ride.

Bad Words is trying to be a nasty little antihero comedy about a grown man crashing a kids’ spelling bee to settle old scores, and it commits hard to that mean-spirited premise. The problem is the movie often mistakes abrasiveness for subversion, leaning on shock gags and humiliation that can feel more unpleasant than funny, especially given the kid-centric setting. It also asks you to buy some pretty stretchy logic and then rushes toward a softer, tidier wrap-up that may feel unearned if you weren’t already on its wavelength. If you enjoy dark comedies where the lead is intentionally awful and the laughs come from discomfort, you’ll find a few sharp Bateman moments and a solid performance from the child actor—but if you want warmth, plausibility, or clever satire, this one may just feel like a long wince.
