Jane Got a Gun (2015)

Jane Got a Gun is the kind of lean, hard-edged Western that earns its thrills the old-fashioned way: with tense preparation, moral grit, and a frontier atmosphere you can almost taste in the dust. Gavin O’Connor frames the New Mexico landscape as both beautiful and unforgiving, giving Natalie Portman room to build Jane into more than a genre heroine—she’s a survivor with scars, resolve, and a fierce sense of what’s worth defending. Joel Edgerton brings a bruised tenderness to the story’s uneasy partnership, while Ewan McGregor makes the looming threat feel personal rather than cartoonish, keeping the danger taut even in quiet scenes. It’s not for viewers who want a playful, romanticized West—this one can be grim and occasionally brutal—but if you’re on the fence about a Western with real emotional weight and solid craftsmanship, it’s an underrated ride.

Jane Got a Gun is clearly aiming for a gritty, character-driven Western where a woman takes control of her fate and turns a homestead into a last-stand battleground, and Natalie Portman commits to that premise. The problem is the storytelling leans hard on flashbacks and choppy transitions, which drains tension from what should feel urgent and makes the whole thing oddly dreary for a siege setup. You’ll get competent gunplay and a solid cast doing their best, but the pacing can feel inert, like the movie is trudging toward a climax it hasn’t fully earned. If you want a lean, propulsive Western or a clean romantic triangle, this may test your patience; if you’re okay with a somber mood and a slow-burn survival story, there’s something to appreciate.
