Hidden (2015)

Hidden is the kind of lean, pressure-cooker thriller that turns a small space into an entire world, wringing dread from silence, routine, and the terrifying idea that safety is always temporary. The Duffer brothers keep the storytelling stripped down and tense, letting the cramped bunker, the strict rules, and the ominous sounds above ground do most of the screaming, while Alexander Skarsgård and Andrea Riseborough make the family’s fear feel intimate and human rather than just “movie scary.” It’s horror with discipline—more about atmosphere and escalating suspense than splatter—building toward a final stretch that lands with the satisfying click of a well-made trap. If you want jump-scare overload or lots of exposition, it may feel too minimalist, but if you like your genre films tight, moody, and confidently controlled, this one sticks.

Hidden is clearly aiming for a tense, claustrophobic survival story about a family trying to stay quiet, stay sane, and stay alive, and it mostly plays like a thriller with horror seasoning rather than a full-on scare machine. The problem is the first stretch can feel sluggish and repetitive, and when the movie finally needs sharper writing and more natural dialogue, it sometimes rushes past those moments instead of earning them. Add in occasional shaky-cam and a marketing vibe that promises “horror” more than the film actually delivers, and you may end up waiting for a payoff that arrives a bit late and a bit messy. Still, the small cast commits, the bunker setting creates real pressure, and if you like slow-burn tension and end-of-the-world paranoia more than big scares, it can be a decent one-night watch.
