Second Act (2018)

Second Act is the kind of breezy, big-hearted crowd-pleaser that lives and dies on its star—and Jennifer Lopez carries it with the relaxed confidence of someone who knows exactly how to make an underdog story sparkle. The movie’s secret weapon is its vibe: warm, funny, and aspirational without being preachy, letting workplace wish-fulfillment and rom-com charm mingle with glossy Madison Avenue fashion and a few laugh-out-loud, slightly PG-13-raunchy asides. Vanessa Hudgens and Leah Remini give Lopez lively, well-cast sparring partners, and director Peter Segal keeps the pace snappy so the film never lingers too long on its own contrivances. It won’t be for you if you can’t tolerate a fairy-tale premise, but if you’re in the mood for something upbeat that roots for second chances—and makes them look fabulous—this one goes down easy.

Second Act is clearly aiming for an upbeat “it’s never too late” rom-com about street smarts beating snobbery, with Jennifer Lopez bringing her usual charisma and a few genuinely warm, crowd-pleasing moments. The problem is the script stacks coincidence on top of coincidence until it starts feeling like a pitch meeting that never got a second draft, and the big turns are so contrived you can almost hear the gears grinding. If you need your romantic comedies to make even a little sense and earn their emotions, this one will likely test your patience with its messy pacing and predictable beats. But if you’re happy to coast on J.Lo’s charm, a glossy corporate makeover fantasy, and a breezy PG-13 edge, it can still work as low-stakes comfort viewing.
