Tsubaki Kyota holds sway over the entire classroom and is quite a playboy. Inexplicably they fall in love. Meanwhile, Tsubaki Kyota has commitment issues...
What people think about Love for Beginners
Love for Beginners is the kind of high-school romance that wins you over with its gentleness: it takes an insecure girl who can transform everyone else and lets her slowly learn how to see herself with the same kindness. The vibe is sweet and breezy, with just enough comedic bite in the classroom dynamics to make the warmth feel earned, not syrupy, and the leads’ chemistry does a lot of the heavy lifting in the best way. It’s a comfort-watch about first love, self-worth, and the confusing ways people act when they’re scared of real commitment. If you’re allergic to teen-romance tropes or want something edgy, this may not be your lane—but if you’re in the mood for something cute, heartwarming, and sincerely romantic, it’s easy to say yes to.
Love for Beginners is clearly aiming for a sweet, makeover-tinged high school romance where an insecure girl finds confidence and love in the most unexpected place. The problem is the setup leans heavily on mean-spirited teasing and a weak opening, so if you don’t buy into the premise early, the whole “inexplicable” love story can feel forced rather than earned. A lot of viewers also struggle with the leads’ chemistry and find the characters more frustrating than charming, especially with the playboy/commitment-issues angle. If you like straightforward shoujo-style drama and don’t mind thin motivations, you might still enjoy the cute moments and styling theme, but if you need believable romance and likable leads, this may waste your time.
