Authors Anonymous (2014)
When a dysfunctional group of unpublished writers accept Hannah into their fold, the last thing they expect is her overnight success. Can these lovable misfits achieve their artistic dreams and avoid killing one another in the process?
What people think about Authors Anonymous
Authors Anonymous is the kind of small, scrappy comedy that finds its sweet spot in the petty jealousies and accidental tenderness of creative people trapped in the same room. It plays like a particularly good sitcom episode stretched to feature length—quick jabs, bruised egos, and the oddly comforting rhythm of misfits bickering their way toward something like friendship. Dennis Farina brings a welcome edge and authority to the ensemble, giving the group’s chaos a sharp, grounded center whenever he’s on screen. It’s not for everyone—especially if you want big cinematic ambition—but if you enjoy character-driven humor about artists being their own worst enemies, it’s an easy, likable watch.
Authors Anonymous wants to be a warm, mockumentary-style comedy about creative insecurity and the bruised egos of would-be writers, and you can see the appealing idea underneath it. The problem is the execution: the satire rarely lands, the jokes feel familiar, and the pacing can drift into tedious territory as it leans on stock “quirky misfits” clichés instead of sharper observations. A solid cast occasionally squeezes out a few charming moments, but the film doesn’t give them enough genuinely funny or surprising material to work with. If you love writerly in-jokes and don’t mind a low-energy, been-there mockumentary vibe, you might tolerate it—otherwise, this one is likely to test your patience.
