Happy Ending (2023)

Happy Ending feels special because it treats a modern relationship dilemma with an unusually light touch and a surprisingly big heart, finding humor in awkward honesty without turning its characters into punchlines. Joosje Duk directs with a confident, naturalistic ease, letting scenes breathe and giving the comedy room to land while the romance stays grounded in recognizable emotions. Gaite Jansen and Martijn Lakemeier make Luna and Mink feel like real people trying, failing, and trying again, with Joy Delima adding a spark that keeps the film lively rather than lurid. It is frank and explicit about sex and boundaries, so it won’t be for everyone, but if you’re open to a candid, well-paced rom-com that actually talks about what couples usually avoid, it’s disarmingly watchable.

Happy Ending is clearly aiming for a modern, sex-positive rom-com about mismatched desire and how a “bold solution” can shake a relationship into honesty. The problem is it often treats the threesome premise like a hook rather than a doorway into deeper communication, so the characters can feel underwritten and the emotional beats land softer than they should. If you’re hoping for a sharp, insightful look at intimacy and boundaries, you may find it oddly hollow and more awkward than illuminating. That said, the cast brings a likable, natural vibe and there are a few moments of relatable tension, so it can work if you just want a breezy, adult-themed relationship comedy and aren’t expecting much depth.
