What people think about Spectral
Spectral is the kind of lean, propulsive sci-fi thriller that doesn’t just throw “ghosts” at soldiers—it makes the mystery feel tangible, tactical, and weirdly plausible, as if a battlefield horror story wandered into a DARPA lab and came back with schematics. Nic Mathieu keeps the pace snapping forward through a ruined European city, balancing night-vision dread and boots-on-the-ground action with the satisfying pleasure of watching smart people test theories under fire. The visuals and effects sell the otherworldly threat with crisp, unsettling clarity, while James Badge Dale and Emily Mortimer anchor the mayhem with grounded urgency that keeps it from feeling like empty spectacle. It’s not for viewers looking for deep character drama or a bloodless ride—this one gets grim and violent—but if you want a clean, entertaining mash-up of military action and science-driven suspense, it’s a highly watchable jolt.
Spectral is clearly trying to be a boots-on-the-ground sci-fi war thriller, mixing military banter and tactics with a “what are these things?” supernatural mystery. The problem is that once the premise hooks you, the movie often settles for familiar action beats and serviceable explanations, so it can feel more like a polished Netflix prototype than a film that really sticks in your head. The scale also feels oddly contained for a city-under-siege story, and the characters are more functional than memorable, which makes the stakes land with less punch than they should. Still, the creature concept, some sleek tech design, and a few tense set pieces make it a decent time if you want straightforward, violent sci-fi action and don’t need much originality or emotional weight.
