Tammy (2014)

Tammy is at its best when it lets Melissa McCarthy do what she does so effortlessly: turn a human train wreck into someone you can’t help but root for, even as she makes the worst possible choices with hilarious conviction. It’s a scrappy, R-rated road comedy with a slightly bruised heart, powered by the unexpected chemistry between McCarthy and Susan Sarandon, whose hard-drinking Pearl is equal parts menace, mischief, and oddly moving. The movie’s pleasures come less from a pristine plot than from the lived-in vibe, the sharp one-liners, and the way its supporting players (including a welcome Kathy Bates) keep tossing Tammy into new shades of trouble. It won’t be for everyone—its humor can be broad and its characters messy—but if you like your comedies loud, profane, and anchored by performers who can squeeze laughs out of raw nerves, this trip is worth taking.

Tammy wants to be a messy, raunchy road-trip comedy about a woman hitting rock bottom and clawing her way back, and you can see the intention to mix heart with chaos.
