Franck Khalfoun directs with a sleek, nightmarish control, pairing grimy neon visuals with a hypnotic, synth-heavy score that turns the city into a pulsing anxiety dream, while Elijah Wood delivers a startlingly committed performance that’s equal parts sympathetic and terrifying. It’s smart, stylish, and genuinely unnerving, using its mannequin-shop setting and art-world backdrop to create a mood of obsession and loneliness that lingers long after the credits. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the experience is deliberately unsettling, but if you can handle extreme horror with real craft and invention, this one hits hard.

Maniac (2012) is clearly aiming for a grimy, psychological character study disguised as a slasher, using Elijah Wood’s committed performance and an intimate, unsettling perspective to put you uncomfortably close to the killer’s headspace. The problem is that the film often confuses “disturbing” with “relentless,” piling on graphic brutality and scalping in a way that can feel more punishing than purposeful, while the story itself isn’t deep or surprising enough to earn all that suffering.
