Antiviral (2012)
Syd March is employed at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. When he becomes infected with the disease that kills super sensation Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target for collectors and rabid fans. He must unravel the mystery surrounding her death before he suffers the same fate.
What people think about Antiviral
Antiviral is the kind of debut that announces a filmmaker with a steady hand and a sharp, unsettling imagination: a sleek sci-fi nightmare where celebrity worship becomes literal infection. Brandon Cronenberg builds a cold, clinical world of white rooms and quiet dread, and then lets the body-horror seep in like a stain you can’t scrub out, all while skewering our hunger to consume fame in any form. Caleb Landry Jones gives Syd March a brittle, haunted intensity that makes the film’s escalating sickness feel personal, not just provocative, and Malcolm McDowell adds a silky menace that fits the corporate rot at the story’s core. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone who wants their horror comforting, but if you like smart, grotesque genre films that linger in your mind long after the credits, this one is a bracing, original dose.
Antiviral is clearly trying to be a chilly, satirical body-horror riff on celebrity worship and consumer culture, and the premise is sharp enough to make you lean in. The problem is it often feels more like an art installation than a thriller: the pacing is slow, the characters are intentionally remote, and the story can play out in a schematic way that keeps tension at arm’s length. If you need emotional connection, clear stakes, or momentum to stay engaged, this one may feel sterile and frustrating rather than unsettling. But if you’re into clinical visuals, uncomfortable ideas, and horror that’s more conceptual than crowd-pleasing, Brandon Cronenberg’s debut has a distinctive, nasty little flavor worth sampling.
