Elvis & Nixon is the kind of “this can’t be real” true story that plays like a perfectly tuned odd-couple chamber piece, where history and absurdity shake hands and somehow make sense. Liza Johnson keeps the tone light on its feet while letting the moment’s cultural weirdness breathe, and the movie’s real engine is watching Michael Shannon’s ferociously committed Elvis ricochet off Kevin Spacey’s tightly wound, wary Nixon in a duel of ego, charm, and unexpected vulnerability. It’s funny without turning either man into a cartoon, and engaging enough that even if you don’t care about politics or Presley lore, you’ll enjoy the sheer pleasure of two great actors sparring in close quarters. If you’re looking for a sweeping biopic or deep policy drama, this isn’t that—but if you want a smart, entertaining slice of American strangeness, it’s a delight.
