Crush (2013)

Crush is the kind of slick, tightly wound teen thriller that sneaks up on you: it starts in the familiar hallways of high school ambition and crushes, then steadily tightens the screws until every glance and “friendly” gesture feels loaded. Malik Bader keeps the movie moving with a confident, professional grip on suspense, letting the mystery simmer while the romantic undercurrents make the danger feel personal rather than procedural. Lucas Till sells the pressure of a kid trying to protect his future, while Sarah Bolger and Crystal Reed bring real texture to what could’ve been simple archetypes, turning jealousy and longing into something genuinely unsettling. It’s not for viewers who want their teen dramas light and cozy—this one has moderate violence and a mean streak—but if you like your thrillers twisty, watchable, and anchored by strong performances, it’s an easy recommendation.

Crush is clearly aiming for a slick teen-stalker thriller where popularity, jealousy, and obsession spiral into danger, and it does have a few moments of menace plus a cast that’s trying to sell the melodrama. The problem is the story feels heavily borrowed and often unbelievable, so instead of tension building, you may find yourself predicting every turn well before it happens. The pacing leans more on repetitive suspicion and soapiness than genuine suspense, which can make the “thriller” label feel a bit generous. If you like glossy, PG-13-ish stalker tales and don’t mind clichés, you might coast through it, but if you’re looking for sharp writing, surprises, or real psychological bite, this probably isn’t worth your time.
