Mr. Right (2016)

Mr. Right is the kind of romantic-comedy curveball that feels like it was spiked with adrenaline: a meet-cute that keeps swerving into danger, then back into flirtation, without losing its grin. Sam Rockwell turns the title character into a buoyant, off-kilter whirlwind—equal parts lethal and oddly gentlemanly—while Anna Kendrick matches him beat for beat, making their chemistry the movie’s true special effect. Director Paco Cabezas leans into a screwball, candy-colored crime vibe where the action is punchy, the banter is fast, and the whole thing plays like a twisted fairy tale for grown-ups. It is violent and profane, and the tone is knowingly ridiculous, so if you want grounded realism this won’t be your ride—but if you’re on the fence, it’s hard to resist a film this charismatic about being weird.

Mr. Right is trying to mash up a quirky rom-com with a hitman-on-the-run crime caper, and on paper Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick sound like a cheat code for charm. The problem is the movie can’t decide whether it wants you swooning or wincing, so the cute banter keeps crashing into bursts of bloody violence and it ends up feeling like two different films fighting for control. The writing leans hard on “random” quirks and smug monologues, which may come off more try-hard than clever if you’re not already on its wavelength. If you want a coherent romance or a tight crime thriller, this will likely annoy you, but if you can tolerate tonal whiplash for a couple of charismatic leads and some offbeat action beats, it’s an easy, disposable watch.
