The Show (2017)

The Show is the kind of dark, daring drama that grabs you by the collar and asks an uncomfortable question: what happens when entertainment stops pretending it has limits? Giancarlo Esposito directs with a cool, controlled menace, turning a glossy TV-studio world into something quietly nightmarish, while Josh Duhamel gives a surprisingly compelling performance as a host whose public heroism curdles into something far more complicated. The film’s tension comes less from twists than from watching ambition, ratings, and audience appetite tighten like a noose—slick, satirical, and deeply unsettling in the best way. Fair warning: the violence is graphic and the subject matter is bleak, but if you can handle a hard-edged critique of reality TV and moral compromise, it’s a provocative watch that lingers long after the credits.

The Show wants to be a scathing indictment of reality TV and our appetite for spectacle, using an extreme premise to force a moral reckoning. The problem is it rarely trusts the audience: the satire is blunt, the tone lurches between grotesque shock and sermonizing, and the film’s “message” can feel more like provocation than insight. If you’re sensitive to suicide content or you prefer social commentary with nuance and emotional responsibility, this one may feel exploitative rather than illuminating. That said, the cast brings some conviction, and if you can tolerate the heavy-handedness, it may still work as a grim, conversation-starting cautionary tale rather than a satisfying drama.
