Big Game (2014)

Big Game is a gleeful throwback to the kind of lean, crowd-pleasing adventure thrillers that know exactly how to mix danger, wonder, and a wink of humor without turning into a parody. Dropping a larger-than-life Samuel L. Jackson president into Finland’s vast, icy wilderness alongside a determined 13-year-old on a rite-of-passage hunt, it finds real charm in their odd-couple chemistry and keeps the momentum humming with crisp action beats and handsome, outdoorsy cinematography. Director Jalmari Helander stages the set pieces with a pulpy confidence—clean, punchy, and just heightened enough to feel like a Saturday-night movie in the best way. It won’t be for everyone if you need gritty realism, but if you’re craving brisk, good-natured escapism with solid effects and a big-hearted sense of fun, this one hits the target.

Big Game is clearly aiming for a throwback, crowd-pleasing action-adventure: a kid’s coming-of-age survival tale mashed up with a “President under fire” thriller. The problem is it can’t decide if it wants to be a straight, tense chase movie or a knowingly goofy B-movie, so the tone swerves and the stakes rarely feel as urgent as the setup promises. The writing and pacing are uneven, with set pieces that should pop instead landing a bit weightless, like it’s playing to both kids and adults without fully satisfying either. Still, Samuel L. Jackson brings some charm and the Finnish wilderness setting is a fun change of scenery—just don’t go in expecting tight suspense or a serious, grounded action ride.
