Maybe I Do (2023)
Michelle and Allen, who have reached the point in their relationship where they are considering next steps, decide to invite their parents to finally meet and to offer some understanding of why marriage works. Except the parents already know each other quite well, which leads to some very distinct opinions about the value of marriage.
What people think about Maybe I Do
Maybe I Do is the kind of grown-up romantic comedy that feels pleasantly old-fashioned in the best way: it’s less about contrived hijinks and more about the messy, funny, bruisingly human truths people carry into love. The real treat is watching a stacked ensemble—Diane Keaton and company included—turn what could’ve been a light setup into something charming and surprisingly wistful, where every glance and line reading adds texture. Its vibe is warm, talky, and bittersweet, the sort of date-night movie that can make you laugh and then quietly nudge you into thinking about the promises we make and the compromises we live with. If you want broad slapstick or a swoony fantasy, it may feel too conversational, but if you’re in the mood for a diverting rom-com with some adult honesty under the gloss, it’s easy to recommend.
Maybe I Do wants to be a glossy, grown-up rom-com about commitment, with a clever “parents meet and everything implodes” setup and a cast that should, on paper, make it sing. The problem is it often plays like a stage farce filmed in nice clothes: lots of people standing around delivering tidy speeches about marriage, with revelations that feel more mechanical than surprising. If you need natural chemistry, sharp modern humor, or filmmaking that adds energy beyond the dialogue, this may feel talky, schematic, and oddly weightless. But if you’re happy to watch talented actors do their best with a contrived dinner-party meltdown and you don’t mind soapier, conversation-driven storytelling, it can still pass as a low-stakes, easy watch.
