The tone is unsettling, funny in its intensity, and genuinely thought-provoking, like eavesdropping on brilliant late-night arguments that keep getting stranger and more convincing. If you prefer tidy answers or dislike seeing clips of horror imagery (including brief nudity from The Shining), it may not be your comfort zone—but if you’ve ever fallen down a movie rabbit hole, this one is irresistible.

Room 237 is clearly trying to celebrate the obsessive joy of reading hidden meaning into The Shining, letting a handful of passionate voices spin their theories while the film hypnotically loops clips, reenactments, and visual “evidence.” The problem is it often feels less like a documentary building an argument and more like being trapped at a party with strangers who won’t stop reaching—fascinating for a while, then repetitive, indulgent, and occasionally bordering on gibberish. If you want grounded film criticism, historical context, or any attempt to fact-check and weigh claims, this will likely frustrate you because it refuses to adjudicate anything. But if you enjoy conspiracy-adjacent pattern spotting and can treat it as a mood piece about fandom obsession rather than a serious analysis, it’s oddly compelling.
