Always earns its title by making devotion feel less like a movie promise and more like a hard-won choice, carried on the shoulders of two people who’ve been bruised by life in different ways. Song Il-gon directs with a gentle hand and a bruising edge, letting So Ji-sub’s guarded toughness and Han Hyo-joo’s luminous warmth build a romance that’s tender without being naïve, and dramatic without feeling manipulative. The vibe is bittersweet and grounded, with the kind of fateful coincidences that recall City Lights while still keeping a distinctly modern, slightly darker pulse. It isn’t for viewers who want a purely cozy love story—there’s nudity and some uncomfortable workplace harassment—but if you’re open to a romance that hits like a soft song and a gut punch in the same breath, this one stays with you.

Always is clearly aiming for a bruised, old-school romantic melodrama—two wounded people finding something worth fighting for—and it mostly leans on sincerity rather than cleverness. The leads do a lot of heavy lifting, selling the tenderness and the rough edges, but the movie’s darker tone (including some uncomfortable workplace harassment) can feel at odds with what some viewers expect from a sweeping romance. If you’re coming for a guaranteed tearjerker, you may be surprised that it doesn’t always hit as hard as its setup promises, and the final stretch can feel a bit rushed.
