Director Hiroaki Matsuyama keeps the tension tight and playful, staging the competition like a psychological sporting event—clean visuals, sharp pacing, and constant little reversals that make you lean in without needing to spoil anything. Shota Matsuda’s Akiyama has that cool, watchful intelligence you want in a guide through a maze, while Mikako Tabe brings a nervy sincerity that gives the mind games a real emotional pulse. If you enjoy twisty, talky thrillers where the drama comes from logic, manipulation, and moral choices rather than action set pieces, it’s a terrific ride—but if you need warm, naturalistic character drama more than cerebral scheming, this may feel cold by design.
