Blood (2012)
When police discover a young girl brutally murdered, brothers Joe Fairburns and Chrissie Fairburns join their supervisor Robert to investigate main suspect Jason Buliegh, a local sex offender and social outcast. Forced to release Jason from police custody, the Fairburns take matters into their own hands in an attempt to coerce a confession.
What people think about Blood
Blood is special because it takes a familiar crime setup and turns it into a tense moral pressure-cooker, where the real mystery isn’t just who did it, but what justice costs when the rules start to feel inadequate. Nick Murphy directs with a cool, rain-slicked polish and a creeping sense of dread, letting the small-town atmosphere close in as every choice tightens the noose. Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham are riveting as brothers whose bond is tested in ways that feel raw and tragically human, while Mark Strong brings a watchful gravity that keeps the suspense humming. It’s grim, violent, and unflinching—especially in its subject matter—so it’s not for everyone, but if you want a smart, well-acted thriller that lingers like a bad conscience, this one delivers.
Blood is clearly aiming for a grim, morally messy police thriller about what happens when grief and rage push decent people past the point of no return. The problem is it often feels like it’s reaching for big themes—vigilantism, guilt, corruption—without giving the characters enough depth or backstory to make their choices land with real weight, and the pacing can drag while the tension fizzles rather than tightens. If you want a sharp, tightly constructed procedural or something genuinely original, this may feel like a familiar descent played on a slightly wobbly script. That said, the performances (especially Bettany, Graham, and Strong) do a lot of heavy lifting, and if you’re in the mood for a bleak, rough-edged character spiral with some nasty violence and disturbing subject matter, you might still get something out of it.
