It’s light on its feet but not empty-headed, quietly rooting for a young woman’s ambition even as it indulges in old-school glamour, witty banter, and a romance that keeps changing its shape. If you’re allergic to heightened, feel-good period charm (and there is a brief, R-rated sex scene), it may be too frothy—but if you want a movie that’s breezy, stylish, and sincerely crowd-pleasing, this one types its way straight into your heart.

Populaire is trying to be a fizzy, candy-colored 1950s rom-com that turns competitive speed-typing into a feel-good sports movie, and on that surface level it mostly delivers. The problem is it’s so polished and frothy that if you’re looking for real emotional depth, sharper character work, or any genuine surprises, it can feel lightweight and a bit mechanical. The romance and “training montage” beats follow a pretty familiar track, so you’ll likely see the turns coming well before the characters do. Still, the period styling is charming, the leads have easy chemistry, and the typing contests are staged with enough energy to entertain—just don’t go in expecting more than a pleasant, conventional confection.
