Rocketman (2019)

Rocketman is special because it doesn’t just recount Elton John’s life—it translates it into a bold, emotionally tuned musical fantasia where songs become confessionals and spectacle becomes storytelling. Taron Egerton is electrifying, capturing both the swagger and the bruised vulnerability beneath the glitter, while Dexter Fletcher stages the big numbers with such color and momentum that the film practically dances through its own heartbreak. The costumes and production design are gloriously over-the-top in the best way, and the soundtrack lands like a greatest-hits album that also happens to be a diary. It does go to dark places—addiction, intimacy, and hard-earned self-acceptance—so it’s not for viewers wanting a sanitized tribute, but if you’re open to a jukebox biopic with real bite and real feeling, this one soars.

Rocketman is clearly trying to be more than a paint-by-numbers music biopic, leaning into fantasy-musical flourishes to mirror Elton John’s larger-than-life persona and inner turmoil. When it works, it’s because Taron Egerton commits hard and the film delivers a few genuinely exhilarating, emotional musical sequences rather than bland karaoke reenactments. But underneath the glitter, it still hits a lot of familiar “rise, fall, rehab” beats, and the pacing can sag once the story settles into addiction-and-trauma repetition, making parts feel more dutiful than electric. If you want a tightly structured, historically meticulous cradle-to-stage biography, or you’re tired of the standard biopic formula, this may frustrate you; if you’re open to a stylized, sometimes messy, feelings-first musical confession, it’s worth the time.
