Penance (2013)

Penance is special because Kiyoshi Kurosawa turns a simple, devastating premise into a slow-blooming spell of grief and dread, where the air itself seems to remember what the characters wish they could forget. Instead of chasing easy shocks, the film (and its elegantly constructed, time-spanning storytelling) lets guilt seep into every frame, using calm compositions and precise visual control to make ordinary spaces feel haunted by silence. The tone is quietly nightmarish—more psychological bruise than jump-scare—building an uneasy momentum as each woman’s adulthood bends under the weight of a childhood moment that never found closure. If you want tidy answers or cathartic release, it may feel punishing, but if you’re on the fence and crave an atmospheric drama that lingers like a bad dream, this is Kurosawa at his most controlled and unsettling.

Penance wants to be a slow-burn study of guilt and trauma, following four women whose lives are warped by a childhood murder and a grieving mother’s curse. Kiyoshi Kurosawa brings a chilly, controlled atmosphere and a few genuinely unsettling character beats, but the film’s TV-miniseries DNA shows: it can feel repetitive, heavily expository, and more like a set of case files than an emotional gut-punch. If you’re expecting a propulsive mystery or a cathartic payoff, you may end up bored and unsatisfied. If, however, you can tolerate a long, methodical pace for mood, dread, and psychological fallout, there’s enough craft here to keep you watching.
