Perfect Sisters (2014)

Perfect Sisters gets under your skin not through flashy twists, but through the unnervingly believable way it turns a broken household into a pressure cooker—and then watches the lid rattle. Abigail Breslin and Georgie Henley are the hook: their sisterly bond feels lived-in, full of affection, friction, and the kind of persuasive self-justification that makes you understand how terrible choices can start to sound like solutions. Mira Sorvino gives the mother a sad, volatile humanity that keeps the drama from becoming a simple villain story, and the film’s grounded, true-crime tone makes every scene feel a little too close for comfort. It’s not for everyone—its teen substance use and domestic instability are heavy and unrelenting—but if you want a tense, performance-driven thriller that feels painfully plausible, it’s a hard one to shake.

Perfect Sisters is clearly trying to be a dark, ripped-from-the-headlines cautionary tale about neglect, abuse, and how desperation can rot into something unforgivable. The problem is the execution: the tone wobbles between grim thriller and weirdly quirky teen drama, which can make the real-life ugliness feel staged and, at times, unintentionally cartoonish. Pacing and writing don’t always sell the emotional buildup, so instead of tension you may feel like you’re watching a series of set pieces that never quite click. If you want a grounded, psychologically sharp crime drama, this may frustrate you—but if you can tolerate a rough, uneven approach, the cast does bring flashes of intensity that hint at the better film it could’ve been.
