Identity Thief (2013)

Identity Thief is the kind of unruly road-trip comedy that works because it pairs Jason Bateman’s tightly wound, everyman frustration with Melissa McCarthy’s fearless, human wrecking-ball energy, and then lets the sparks fly. The movie’s special trick is how it turns a grim modern anxiety—someone hijacking your life—into a breezy, bad-decision carnival full of pratfalls, quick reversals, and escalating trouble that keeps the pace moving even when the story gets broad. McCarthy in particular barrels through scenes with such commitment that you can feel the film lifting to meet her, while Bateman anchors the chaos with just enough exasperated decency to make you root for him. If you’re hoping for a smart caper, believable character growth, or consistent chemistry, this one can feel messy and oddly long for how thin the jokes are.
