Mama (2013)

Mama is the kind of horror film that sneaks up on you by leading with mood and melancholy, then tightens the screws until even a quiet hallway feels dangerous. Andy Muschietti stages scares with a storyteller’s patience—letting shadows, sound, and unnerving imagery do the work—while still delivering jolts that land because you’re already invested in the fragile new “family” at the center. Jessica Chastain gives the movie a human anchor, playing the reluctant caregiver with grit and warmth that makes the supernatural threat feel personal, not just creepy. It’s not for viewers who avoid peril involving children or intense, disturbing visuals, but if you like your ghost stories atmospheric, emotionally charged, and genuinely scary, this one tucks you in and then refuses to let you sleep.

Mama is aiming for a gothic, fairy-tale-style horror story about grief, motherhood, and the damage left behind when kids survive the unthinkable, and you can feel Guillermo del Toro’s influence in the mood and creature design. The problem is the feature-length plot gets messy and over-explained, leaning hard on familiar haunted-kid and jump-scare conventions instead of letting the dread build naturally. Some of the effects and big “lore” reveals can pull you out of it, and the script sometimes forces characters into contrived choices just to keep the scares moving. If you want tight, subtle horror, this may frustrate you—but if you’re in the mood for a glossy, emotional supernatural thriller with a strong Jessica Chastain anchor and a few genuinely creepy images, it can still scratch that itch.
