Vesper (2022)

Vesper is the kind of science-fiction that feels grown in a petri dish rather than assembled on a studio backlot—strange, tactile, and hauntingly beautiful, with a bio-organic world that looks alive enough to bite. It follows a resourceful 13-year-old survivor whose intelligence and quiet ferocity anchor the film, and Raffiella Chapman makes her feel less like a “chosen one” than a kid forced to become brilliant just to make it to morning. The tone is hushed but tense, more fairy tale than firefight, letting atmosphere and inventive visuals do the heavy lifting while it asks pointed questions about who gets to own the future. It’s not for viewers who want fast, quippy action or a comfortingly clean dystopia—this one is grim and occasionally unsettling—but if you’re craving original world-building with real heart, it’s absolutely worth the trip.

Vesper is clearly aiming for a moody, eco-apocalypse fairy tale where a scrappy teen bio-hacker fights a rigged class system, and the world-building is the main event: strange organisms, grimy textures, and a genuinely original sense of “nature gone wrong.” The problem is the story often feels thinner than the setting, with pacing that drifts and characters who can come off more like ideas than people, so the emotional punches don’t always land. If you want tight plotting, big payoffs, or a deeply felt coming-of-age arc, this may test your patience.
