Conclave turns one of the world’s most secretive rituals into a razor-wire thriller, proving you don’t need car chases when every glance, vote, and whispered alliance can change history. Edward Berger directs with icy control, letting the Vatican’s hushed corridors and candlelit grandeur become a pressure cooker, while the screenplay keeps tightening the screws with the satisfying logic of a great procedural. Ralph Fiennes anchors it all with a performance of weary intelligence and moral unease, surrounded by a first-rate ensemble (Tucci and Lithgow especially) that makes ideology feel personal and ambition feel dangerous. If you’re allergic to talky dramas, it may feel deliberately contained, but if you like smart, tense storytelling where power is the action, this is the kind of movie that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go.

Conclave is clearly aiming for a classy, pressure-cooker Vatican thriller where faith, politics, and ego collide behind locked doors, and it mostly delivers that tense, whispery atmosphere. The problem is that the characters can feel more like ideological chess pieces than fully lived-in people, so the intrigue sometimes plays as “who represents what” rather than a truly messy human drama. The pacing is patient and talk-heavy, which will either feel deliciously procedural or like a lot of solemn corridor-walking and speeches without enough emotional payoff. If you want a psychologically deep, morally complicated thriller with a knockout finish, you may find the final turns a bit too tidy for the buildup—but if you’re happy with polished performances, rich production, and a respectable slow-burn mood, it’s still a solid way to spend an evening.
