Play Dead is the kind of lean, nasty little thriller that takes one wickedly clever premise—faking your own death to get into a morgue—and squeezes it until the tension starts to scream. Patrick Lussier keeps the movie moving with a tight, single-location setup that turns fluorescent hallways and stainless-steel drawers into a pressure cooker, while Bailee Madison sells Chloe’s desperate intelligence in a way that makes you root for her with every risky breath. The real jolt, though, is Jerry O’Connell, who brings a chilling, almost casually cruel presence to the coroner, making the cat-and-mouse feel personal rather than mechanical. It’s not for the squeamish—there’s graphic autopsy imagery and hard-edged violence—but if you like your horror-thrillers brisk, resourceful, and relentlessly suspenseful, this one earns its pulse.

Play Dead wants to be a tight, nasty little morgue-set cat-and-mouse thriller, and the setup is undeniably pulpy in a way that could’ve been fun. The problem is you have to swallow a lot of implausibility to stay on board, and once you do, the movie still struggles to bring fresh ideas or consistent momentum—there are dull stretches where the tension just leaks out. The gore and autopsy imagery are the main “deliverable” here, so if you’re squeamish or don’t enjoy sadistic villain theatrics, this will feel like a grim slog rather than a thrill ride. Still, Bailee Madison commits and the confined location gives it a few tense moments, so it may work as a one-night watch if you’re craving straightforward, nasty horror-thriller vibes and don’t mind logic taking a back seat.
