Alienoid (2022)

Alienoid is the kind of big, brazen crowd-pleaser that reminds you movies can still feel like a theme park ride built by a storyteller with a mischievous grin—part historical fantasy, part sci-fi chase, part action spectacle, all running on pure momentum. Choi Dong-hoon throws genres into a blender and somehow finds a consistent, giddy rhythm, punctuating its oversized set pieces with screwball comedy and a real affection for its oddball heroes. Ryu Jun-yeol’s roguish charm, Kim Tae-ri’s fierce curiosity, and Kim Woo-bin’s cool, controlled presence give the mayhem a human (and not-so-human) anchor, so the film never feels like empty noise. It’s not for viewers who need tidy restraint or minimal plotting, but if you’re on the fence and want something imaginative, energetic, and unabashedly fun, this one earns your time.

Alienoid is clearly trying to be a big, crowd-pleasing mash-up: historical fantasy, modern sci-fi, time-travel chaos, and broad comedy all crammed into one loud package. The problem is it’s so overstuffed and jumpy that the story can feel like it’s sprinting in three directions at once, leaving you more confused than thrilled. The effects and action have moments of flair, but they’re inconsistent enough that the spectacle doesn’t always land, and the plotting can feel like setup piled on top of more setup. If you enjoy maximalist Korean blockbusters and don’t mind a messy, hodgepodge ride to get a few fun character beats (and some charming oddball energy from the leads), you might be fine—if you want clean storytelling and a focused payoff, this will test your patience.
