Banshee Chapter (2013)

Banshee Chapter is the kind of horror that gets under your skin because it feels half like a nightmare and half like a classified file someone forgot to shred. Blair Erickson builds dread with an unnervingly “real” texture—grainy tapes, late-night radio weirdness, and a creeping sense that curiosity itself is the trap—then punctuates it with jolts that don’t rely on cheap noise. Katia Winter makes a terrific anchor as the journalist pushing forward even when the air seems poisoned, and Ted Levine brings a ragged, lived-in menace that turns every conversation into a warning. It’s a grimy, claustrophobic ride with heavy drug content and some genuinely disturbing imagery, so it’s not for the squeamish—but if you like your scares elegant, paranoid, and lingering, this one delivers.

Banshee Chapter is aiming for a paranoid, MKUltra-meets-cosmic-horror vibe, mixing drug-fueled hallucinations with a creeping “numbers station” mystery and a scrappy found-footage texture. When it works, it’s genuinely unnerving in short bursts, with a few nasty images and an off-kilter late-night-radio atmosphere that sticks. The problem is the film leans hard on familiar found-footage beats and jumpy chaos, so the intriguing setup often feels more compelling than the actual story and character drama, and the payoff doesn’t fully cash the check it writes early on. If you want a tightly plotted thriller with a strong emotional hook, you may come away frustrated—but if you’re happy to ride on mood, conspiracy dread, and harsh R-rated imagery, it can still scratch that itch.
