Machete Kills (2013)

Machete Kills is the kind of movie that dares you to keep a straight face while it cranks the action to cartoonish, grindhouse-operatic extremes, and then rewards you for giving in. Robert Rodriguez stages the mayhem with a pulpy, self-aware swagger—every scene feels like it’s winking at you while still delivering real momentum, outrageous set pieces, and a gleefully unhinged Mel Gibson as the villain. Danny Trejo anchors the insanity with stone-faced charisma, making the whole thing feel like a midnight-movie fever dream that somehow never runs out of gas. It’s absolutely not for the squeamish (or anyone allergic to vulgarity and excess), but if you want a loud, bloody, knowingly ridiculous thrill ride, this one earns its audacity.

Machete Kills is trying to be a loud, sleazy, knowingly stupid grindhouse cartoon—bigger stunts, bigger gore, bigger celebrity drop-ins, and a bigger wink at the audience. The problem is it mistakes volume for fun: the plot gets overstuffed with cameos and side bits, the pacing drags between set pieces, and the jokes and splatter start to feel like the same note played again and again. If you want a tight action-thriller or even the sharper novelty of the first film, this will likely feel messy and exhausting. Still, Danny Trejo’s deadpan presence and Rodriguez’s pulpy energy can be enjoyable if you’re specifically in the mood for maximalist, ultra-violent, anything-goes nonsense.
