Brake (2012)
A Secret Service Agent is held captive in the trunk of a car and endures high-speed mental and physical torture as terrorists attempt to extract needed information for their sinister plot.
What people think about Brake
Brake is the kind of lean, mean thriller that takes one audacious idea—one man trapped in a car trunk—and squeezes it for every drop of suspense, turning confinement into a full-body adrenaline rush. Stephen Dorff carries the film with a fiercely committed performance, making each breath, bluff, and breakdown feel immediate as the tension ratchets up through psychological games and sudden bursts of brutality. Director Gabe Torres stages the action with surprising ingenuity, keeping the pace sharp and the mystery simmering even when the walls are literally closing in. Fair warning: it’s intensely claustrophobic and relentlessly harsh, but if you want a high-concept, single-location ride that hits like a panic attack in the best possible way, Brake delivers.
Brake is clearly aiming for a lean, high-concept pressure cooker: one man, one confined space, and a ticking-clock interrogation meant to keep you squirming. It mostly succeeds as a claustrophobic endurance test, and Stephen Dorff commits hard enough to make the suffering feel immediate, even when the setup is thin. The problem is the story leans on twists and mind-games that can feel more smug than smart, and the credibility gaps start to pile up until you may feel the movie is playing you rather than thrilling you. If you like nasty, contained thrillers that are more about anxiety and technique than a satisfying payoff, you might go with it; if you hate feeling manipulated or want a plot that holds up under scrutiny, this will likely annoy you.
