Little Bone Lodge (2023)

Little Bone Lodge earns its chills the old-fashioned way: with a storm-lashed setting so vivid you can almost feel the damp cold, and a pressure-cooker premise that keeps tightening until it squeals. Matthias Hoene stages the night like a trap snapping shut, balancing crime-thriller momentum with horror unease, while Joely Richardson commands the farmhouse with a gaze that suggests every creak in the floorboards has a history. The film’s pleasures are in its taut pacing and sly, character-driven turns—less about cheap jump scares than the dread of realizing you’ve misread the room and there may be no safe side to stand on. It’s not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to harsh language and rough violence, but if you want a lean, atmospheric nail-biter that actually respects your attention, this one’s worth stepping into.

Little Bone Lodge wants to be a tight, one-night pressure cooker: criminals, a hostage situation, and a remote farmhouse that’s clearly hiding something worse than the storm outside. It mostly delivers on mood and tension, with solid performances (especially Joely Richardson) and a grim, wintry atmosphere that keeps things moving. The problem is the story leans hard on “big” reveals and sharp turns that can feel more like contrivances than inevitabilities, and if you’ve seen a few home-invasion or backwoods-thriller mashups, you may start predicting the beats before the film catches up.
