Hell Dogs (2022)

Hell Dogs earns its bite by turning an undercover yakuza thriller into something moodier and more human—an action film that’s as interested in bruised psychology as it is in bruising fists. Masato Harada shoots the criminal underworld with slick, nocturnal style, while a propulsive, distinctive score keeps the tension humming even in quieter scenes where loyalties are being tested. Junichi Okada brings a coiled intensity to the ex-cop at the story’s center, and Kentaro Sakaguchi is mesmerizingly unpredictable as the volatile ally he has to win over, making every conversation feel like it could tip into violence. It’s long and often brutally intense, so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want a yakuza film with real atmosphere, sharp performances, and a steadily tightening vise of suspense, this one delivers.

Hell Dogs clearly wants to be a gritty, lived-in yakuza infiltration thriller, with Junichi Okada anchoring it as a damaged cop trying to survive by getting close to the most volatile guy in the room. The problem is it spends a long time setting the chessboard—lots of names, factions, and procedural exposition—so if you need momentum early, the first stretch can feel heavy and a bit dry. When it does kick in, it’s intense and brutally violent, which will either sell the stakes for you or just feel punishing given the runtime.
