Rush (2013)
In the 1970s, a rivalry propels race car drivers Niki Lauda and James Hunt to fame and glory — until a horrible accident threatens to end it all.
What people think about Rush
Rush is special because it turns Formula 1 into pure cinema: not just speed and spectacle, but a razor-sharp study of two men who define greatness in completely opposite ways. Ron Howard shoots the races with a you-are-there immediacy—the engines feel like thunder in your chest—yet the film’s real propulsion comes from the crackling contrast between Chris Hemsworth’s swaggering charisma and Daniel Brühl’s precise, quietly devastating intensity. It’s thrilling without being hollow, gripping without needing you to know a thing about racing, and it builds tension the way the best dramas do: through choices, pride, and the cost of obsession. Fair warning, it’s also blunt about the era—graphic crash imagery, adult sexuality, and heavy partying—so it’s not for the squeamish, but if you want a sports drama with bite, heart, and real stakes, this one flies.
Rush is Ron Howard aiming for a slick, crowd-pleasing sports drama about obsession, ego, and what it costs to chase greatness, and on that level it largely delivers. The racing sequences are tense and expertly staged, and Daniel Brühl in particular gives the film a grounded, human center even when the script leans into easy contrasts. Where it may lose you is in the emotional depth: it can feel more like a polished highlight reel of rivalry and tragedy than a truly probing look inside either man, with a touch of sentimentality smoothing over the rougher edges. Also, the crash and medical aftermath is graphic and the movie is heavy on sex, drugs, and swagger—so if you want subtle character study or a gentler watch, this probably isn’t your finish line.
