Takeru Satoh brings a gentle, wounded sincerity to a character who could’ve been pure myth, and the film’s choreography has a speed and clarity that makes even small skirmishes feel like full conversations. It is, however, frequently violent and unafraid of dark criminal cruelty, so if you’re sensitive to intense blade violence, it can be a lot—but if you want an adaptation that respects its source while standing proudly as its own crowd-thrilling movie, this one earns the edge of its blade.

Rurouni Kenshin: Part I aims to be a crowd-pleasing live-action origin story: a repentant killer wandering a newly modernizing Japan, trying to do the right thing without taking lives. When it focuses on swordplay, it delivers—clean choreography, a committed lead performance from Takeru Satoh, and enough intensity to justify the violence. The problem is everything connecting those fights: the romance is pretty flat, the supporting cast often feels like placeholders, and the plot can turn into dutiful exposition that drains momentum. If you’re here for character depth, emotional sparks, or a gripping historical drama, you may find it surprisingly pedestrian; if you just want stylish action with a clear moral hook, it’s a solid time.
