Victor Frankenstein (2015)
Eccentric scientist Victor Von Frankenstein creates a grotesque creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment.
What people think about Victor Frankenstein
Victor Frankenstein is less a dusty retelling than a slick, pulsing Victorian thriller that treats the classic myth like a high-voltage character duet. James McAvoy makes Victor a charismatic storm system of ambition and grief, and Daniel Radcliffe’s Igor gives the film its beating heart—smart, funny, and increasingly wary of the man he owes his new life to. Paul McGuigan stages the madness with exuberant momentum, surrounding the pair with lavish, soot-and-gaslight production design and satisfyingly tactile creature work that keeps the gothic atmosphere vivid rather than merely decorative. It’s not the most faithful or philosophical Frankenstein on screen, but if you want a stylish, energetic ride with great chemistry and macabre spectacle, this one earns a watch.
Victor Frankenstein is clearly trying to be a slick, character-driven remix of the classic tale by shifting the focus to the Victor–Igor partnership, with McAvoy and Radcliffe bringing real energy and charm to the banter. The problem is the script feels like it’s sprinting through familiar beats without earning them, so the big moral questions and shocks land as noisy spectacle rather than something genuinely unsettling. The tone can’t quite decide if it wants to be gothic drama, buddy adventure, or romantic detour, and those side plots mostly slow things down instead of deepening the story. If you want a fresh, thoughtful Frankenstein or a truly tense thriller, this will likely feel like a polished rehash—but if you’re in it for lively performances and brisk, PG-13 monster mayhem, it’s passable.
