Rules Don’t Apply is one of those rare modern films that feels like it was poured out of old Hollywood’s golden cocktail shaker—glossy, funny, faintly melancholy, and just odd enough to be irresistible. Warren Beatty stages 1958 Los Angeles with loving craftsmanship and a satirist’s eye, then drops Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich into it as two sincere young people trying to stay decent while the town (and their employer, an intriguingly off-kilter Howard Hughes) keeps moving the goalposts. The pleasure is in the tone: romantic sparks and screwball rhythms brushing up against real longing and the unsettling gravity of power, all carried by performances that keep the characters human rather than symbolic. It’s not for everyone—its shaggy, throwback pacing and eccentric detours can feel like a studio-era epic wandering through a modern runtime—but if you enjoy movies that luxuriate in period vibe while gently skewering American hypocrisy, it’s an easy one to recommend.

Rules Don’t Apply is clearly trying to be a glossy, old-Hollywood romantic dramedy that also peeks behind the curtain at Howard Hughes’ eccentric orbit, and you can feel Warren Beatty’s affection for that era in the costumes, cars, and showbiz texture. The problem is it never quite decides whether it’s a sweeping romance, a satirical Hollywood postcard, or a character study of Hughes, so the pacing drifts and the story keeps changing lanes without landing a satisfying emotional punch. Lily Collins and Alden Ehrenreich are likable, but the romance can feel strangely stiff and undercooked, which makes the whole “forbidden love” hook less swoony than it wants to be. If you’re expecting a sharp comedy, a steamy romance, or a focused Hughes biopic, this may test your patience; if you’re happy to coast on period charm and oddball moments, there’s enough here to mildly enjoy.
