Compliance (2012)

Compliance is the kind of thriller that doesn’t rely on chases or twists so much as the slow, sickening click of ordinary people doing the unthinkable—making it feel less like entertainment and more like a dare to your conscience. Craig Zobel stages the whole ordeal with a tight, almost clinical focus that turns a fluorescent fast-food back room into a pressure cooker, and Ann Dowd is frighteningly convincing as a manager whose need to “do the right thing” curdles into complicity. The tension comes from watching authority weaponized in real time, each small concession paving the way for the next, until you’re asking yourself what you would do with a confident voice on the phone and everyone else watching. It’s not for everyone—its sexual humiliation and coercion are deeply upsetting—but if you can handle a grim, provocative film that sticks to your ribs, it’s a powerful, unforgettable watch.

Compliance is trying to be a tight, real-world nightmare about how easily “authority” can hijack ordinary people’s judgment, and it commits to that idea with grim focus. The problem is that the escalating obedience can start to feel less like insight and more like a test of your patience, especially if you struggle with premises that seem hard to buy once they keep going. It’s also an intensely uncomfortable watch, built around coercion and sexual humiliation, so if you’re sensitive to that material or don’t want a film that feels punishing, this will likely ruin your evening. That said, Ann Dowd is painfully believable, and the stripped-down, pressure-cooker style does create a chilling sense of “this could happen,” even if you may spend half the runtime wanting to scream at the screen.
