Noah (2014)

Noah is special because it treats a story everyone thinks they know as a full-blooded myth—towering, strange, and emotionally bruising—filtered through Darren Aronofsky’s fearless imagination. Russell Crowe gives Noah a granite-weight performance that makes the visions feel less like spectacle than a private, terrifying burden, while Jennifer Connelly grounds the film with human warmth amid the storm. The movie’s vibe is operatic and elemental, with awe-inspiring visuals and a sense of scale that feels carved out of rock and water rather than assembled on a soundstage. It’s not for viewers looking for a gentle, strictly traditional Bible retelling—this one is intense, sometimes grim, and willing to stare into moral darkness—but if you want an epic that actually has something urgent to wrestle with, it’s hard to shake.

Noah is clearly trying to be a bold, mythic reimagining of a familiar story, mixing biblical imagery with Aronofsky’s trademark intensity and a surprisingly eco-apocalyptic angle. The problem is it often feels like it’s straining to be profound, with pacing that drags, battles that add noise more than tension, and a tone that can swing from intimate family drama to loud, muddled spectacle. If you want a straightforward, faith-forward Genesis adaptation, the heavy revisionism and bleak moral turns will likely frustrate you—and the violence and themes of mass death and threatened infanticide make it a rough sit. That said, the film looks expensive in the right ways, Crowe and Connelly commit, and when it settles down into character moments, you can see the ambitious movie it wanted to be.
