The Look of Love (2013)

The Look of Love is a glittering, bittersweet plunge into a very specific kind of British ambition—where showbiz hustle, Soho glamour, and private heartbreak share the same spotlight. Steve Coogan is terrific as Paul Raymond, playing him not as a cartoon rake but as a man whose charm and appetite can fill a room even as the cost quietly accumulates, and Michael Winterbottom keeps the film moving with a lively, old-school energy and richly recreated period texture. It’s funny in the way sharp, worldly stories can be funny, and then unexpectedly tender when it turns its gaze toward family and the things money can’t insulate. Fair warning: the film doesn’t flinch from nudity and heavy drug use, but if you can meet it on that terrain, it’s an entertaining, watchable rise-and-fall tale with real emotional sting.

The Look of Love wants to be a slick, tragic rise-and-fall portrait of Paul Raymond—sex, money, cocaine, and the cost paid at home—anchored by Steve Coogan’s controlled, watchable performance. The problem is it often feels like it’s admiring the surface more than digging into the man, so the big emotional beats (especially involving Debbie) can land oddly muted and at arm’s length. If you’re hoping for a definitive, hard-hitting biopic with real psychological depth, this may feel shallow and strangely sanitized for such a lurid, painful story. But if you’re content with a glossy, episodic snapshot of an era—well-acted, occasionally poignant, and heavy on adult content—you might find it an easy, if ultimately lightweight, watch.
