Junior (2011)

Junior is the kind of horror-fantasy that sneaks up on you: a coming-of-age story filtered through a queasy, imaginative body metamorphosis that feels both absurdly funny and strangely tender. Julia Ducournau directs with a fearless, tactile eye, turning puberty’s everyday humiliations into something uncanny and mesmerizing without ever losing sight of the human being at the center. Garance Marillier is terrific as the prickly, pimple-faced tomboy “Junior,” grounding the weirdness with deadpan charm and real vulnerability as the film’s tone oscillates between gross-out shock, dark wit, and intimate discomfort. If you’re squeamish about body horror, it may test you, but if you like your genre films bold, smart, and unafraid to get under your skin, this one is a bracing little jolt.

Junior is clearly aiming for queasy, body-horror fairy tale territory, using a 13-year-old’s gross-out metamorphosis as a metaphor for puberty and identity. If you need your horror to be plot-driven or neatly explained, this will likely frustrate you, because it leans into discomfort, ambiguity, and “what am I watching?” imagery more than traditional scares. The tone can also feel deliberately awkward and deadpan, which will either read as bold and funny or just off-putting and thin. That said, if you’re up for a short, strange, skin-crawly coming-of-age piece with a distinctive voice and a willingness to get weird, it has a memorable bite.
